the Value of Home Economics (aka Human Ecology)
I enjoyed listening to Danielle talk about Home Economics. My dad's cousin , Norma Lueders Baker had a degree in HE- and was widowed with 4 children in 1956. She was hired at Proctor and Gamble- her approach was more than kitchen itasks. She was instrumental and listed on the patent for the development of Pampers. Clearly this changed the lives of all parents. She also worked with Jif peanut butter and Safeguard soap among many other products. Norma would tell many stories indicating her broad knowledge was instrumental and key to her success. family
Currently the program at University of Wisconsin is the School of Human Ecology. The programs cover a wide range of majors from textile design, consumer science , personal finance, community and nonprofit leadership to human development and family studies. No mention of food or kitchens! (note that UW has a strong agriculture and dairy program which covers food science).
