Berbere Spice Blend

Free

The Ethiopian seasoning blend called berbere (pronounced bear-ba-ree) is sold in some well-stocked supermarkets and spice shops or can be ordered online. It’s easy enough, though, to make a simple homemade version using readily available spices. To pulverize the dried basil, use a mortar and pestle or pulse the leaves in an electric spice grinder.

Convenient
I don't have regular experience with berbere to really critique the blend, but trust Milk Street recipes to be top notch. I was in the middle of making the berbere spiced lentils here on the site to use up some things including berbere that I thought I had in the pantry. When I couldn't find it, this saved the dinner that was already in progress as I had everything to make it and the lentil recipe was wonderful as well. My favorite cooking site by far. Thanks!

This is a good attempt, but it is very far from the real Berbere. If you make any Ethiopian sauces with this spice, you will be missing the target flavor wise. Better to get Berbere from an Ethiopian market or from a trusted online source.
