Greek Apple Cake with Honey and Cinnamon (Milopita)

There are many types of apple cakes, but Greek milopita is unique in that it often is made two very Mediterranean ingredients: olive oil and yogurt. It’s a homey, rustic treat, with a moist, dense crumb studded with chunks of fruit. Our take on milopita is an easy no-mixer affair. The spicing is simple but warm, balanced by the brightness of orange, and we amp up the apple flavor by reducing apple cider to a syrup that’s used in the batter as well as a lustrous glaze on the cooled cake. Heavy cream mixed with a little Greek yogurt, sweetened with a little honey and whipped to soft peaks is a perfect accompaniment. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Tip

Don’t use an apple variety that breaks down when cooked. Choose one or two that are firm and crisp, with a flavor that’s sweet-tart rather than just sugary. Honeycrisp and Gala are two widely available varieties that work well in the cake. Don’t toss the apples with sugar too far in advance or the fruit will begin to soften and release juices.

Wonderful apple cake
The cake is flavorful and moist with lovely hints of honey and orange. It was perfectly browned after approximately 30 minutes of baking so I covered it loosely with foil and kept it in for the entire 60 minutes specified in the instructions. My oven is properly calibrated and I keep an oven thermometer to be sure it is at the proper temp. The end result was a cake that was quite dark but still moist with a beautiful crumb.

Good cake and easy to make
I thought this cake was quite good and would make a good impression for guests. I liked that I didn't have to use any equipment to make it. I did not find it overly sweet as someone else commented. It's a bit dense but I would make it again which is always my bottom line. I used gala apples but think honey crisp would have been better.

It was ok
I put only half the sugar and it still was SO sweet. What I like about this recipe is that the cake did not fall flat and its so pretty when it is done. If I were to make this again, I will put in cherries as the cake is very sweet.

Yum!
Reading the recipe over again after I made it I realized I used apple cider VINEGAR instead of just apple cider (oops!) - not sure how I messed that up, but honestly, it was super delicious this way! I think I might just make it this way from now on, or maybe try half vinegar and half cider.
