  • Fairlight de Michele - Home Cook

Fairlight de Michele is a photographer who lives in Oakland, CA with her husband and two teenagers. Fairlight came to Milk Street with the hopes of recreating her Grandma Erna’s noodle kugel. Grandma Erna is a Holocaust survivor born in Poland and her rich and creamy kugel blessed most holiday tables. Fairlight has tried to make this savory dish in the past with subpar results, so she’s turning to Milk Street for help.

  • Karen Clay - Home Cook

Karen Clay lives in Johns Creek, GA with her husband and two of her three children. Her parents were originally from the south but made their way to the Los Angeles area where she grew up. She remembers her time living around the corner from her maternal grandmother, Margaret, spending the hours before and after school watching her in her kitchen while her parents were at work. One of her favorite food memories is of her grandmother’s coconut layer cake, which she hopes Milk Street will be able to recreate so she can pass it down to her daughter.

  • Marie Griffin - Home Cook

Marie Griffin was born in Washington, D.C. but has moved around throughout her adult life. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters close by. Growing up, Marie developed an interest in baking and as her children grew, she started taking baking classes, eventually opening bakeries in the various places where she lives. Heavily influenced by her French-Canadian heritage, Marie is hoping to top her homemade bread with a family favorite pork spread called Gorton that was served over the holidays, but she can’t figure it out. Can Milk Street?

  • Linda White - Home Cook

Linda White lives with her husband in Fort Washington, PA, an area where members of her family have lived since 1698. Linda is a personal chef and has worked in and around food her entire life. She was raised by her grandmother who collected recipes in a book and would attribute them to whomever she received them from. Included is a handwritten recipe for her neighbor Adena’s hot milk sponge cake. Unfortunately, the ingredients were not all in their proper order and there were no instructions for how to make them. She turned to Milk Street for help.

  • Royce Tanaka - Home Cook

Royce Tanaka is originally from Hawaii, but currently lives in Fresno, CA with his wife Terri. Royce is a Chaplain with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. His grandfather, Masao Teruya, was born in the Territory of Hawaii and served in the US Army as a Tech 4 in WW2. After the war, he enrolled in the first class to attend the baking program at the Honolulu Vocational School, leading him to open a handful of bakeries where Royce’s family all worked and where his grandfather made everything by heart. Royce is hoping Milk Street will be able to recreate his grandfather's famous butter rolls so he can share them with his family who are coming into town for a visit.

  • Sapna Pandya - Home Cook

Sapna Pandya lives in Washington, D.C. with her wife and daughter. Her family has lived in the DC-Maryland area since the 1950s when her Great Aunt moved there from Gujarat in western India. Sapna has memories of coming home from school to see the kitchen table, counter and floor space all absolutely covered with rolled out, cumin-accented, flattened pieces of turmeric-colored dough. These little circles of dough had been laid out to dry, lovingly (and painstakingly) pierced all over with her grandmother's nails to prevent them from puffing up when they were fried. Sapna hopes Milk Street will be able to recreate this family favorite snack, crunchy poori, and bring back those fond memories of her grandmother.

  • Teryluz Andreu - Home Cook

Teryluz Andreu and her siblings grew up in a small beach town called Humacao in southeastern Puerto Rico. Despite Tery’s mother’s busy schedule, she was committed to providing her family with home-cooked meals and was a generous hostess during family celebrations and holidays. Tery recently moved to Miami from Chicago to be closer to her mother and sisters and sadly, Tery’s mother passed away in 2019. She is hoping Milk Street will be able to help her bring back the holiday pork dish her mother often prepared, pérnil al caldero.

  • Melissa Long - Home Cook

When Melissa Long moved from Cincinnati to Las Vegas in the early 2000s, she worked in a casino with Tatiana, a friend from outside of Prague. Occasionally, Tatiana prepared a rustic, comforting soup that included pork ribs, smoked Polish sausage, sauerkraut, mushrooms and potatoes. “She never used a recipe,” Melissa recalled. “It was from her memories growing up on her parents’ farm.” These kinds of simple, hearty foods were familiar to Melissa from her childhood. Melissa was raised by her grandparents, who cooked frugal, German-style dishes like sausages and sauerkraut. It’s been 10 years since she’s attempted to make the soup and is hoping Milk Street can help her re-create it.

  • Tim Donovan - Home Cook

Tim Donovan is a retired lawyer currently living in Huntington, NY with his wife Marie and his youngest son. His eldest son and daughter and their young grandchildren live nearby. Tim has fond memories of his mother cooking for his family growing up and wants to share those memories with his children by recreating his family’s calzone inspired by their Italian heritage. He’s tried to make the calzone in the past, but the crust is always too doughy. His daughter has started a family cookbook and Tim would love to include this recipe in it.

  • Jessica Costantini - Home Cook

Jessica Costantini of Toronto, Ohio, has fond memories of her maternal grandmother’s Christmas popovers. She still recalls the aroma of them baking in the blackened, well-worn muffin tins that her grandmother used. “They were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, with air pockets of steamy, buttery dough.” Split open then filled with her grandmother’s tender beef in cream sauce, the popovers were part of a rich, comforting meal. When Jessica attempted to replicate those popovers, hers ended up burned on the outside, and the insides were either too doughy or dry. So she turned to Milk Street for assistance.
